Solution Focused Brief Therapy
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), developed by Insoo Kim Berg and Steve de Shazer, is an evidenced-based practice which focuses on clients’ inherent strengths and competencies. SFBT helps participants discover their solutions to their challenges instead of focusing on the problems they are currently facing. This future-focused, goal-directed intervention is effective because clients, including small children, experience their own ability to make positive changes efficiently. SFBT succeeds at individual, couple and family levels of engagement because it appeals to the clients’ capabilities, whether or not they have recognized these strengths before.
Maintaining a high standard of ethical and professional practice is essential. Respect for each participant’s worldview, challenges, and capabilities is inherent in solution-focused practice. This culturally sensitive approach embraces clients’ diversity as an opportunity to learn from, and to share knowledge with, each other. Client members are considered experts in their own life experience and each stakeholder’s perspective is important, regardless of their unique considerations. The process builds stronger hope for all participating members.
SFBT Webinars
The Brief Therapy Institute (BTI), Department of Family Therapy, College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Nova Southeastern University is offering a series of interactive webinar trainings based on the work of Berg and de Shazer. Each SFBT webinar is 2-hour long presentation, followed by a 30 minute Question & Answer session using questions generated in real time by webinar participants. Continuing Education credits are available for licensed professionals, and Certificates of Attendance for non-licensed participants. Each session is timely-scheduled on Fridays from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. Each scheduled session focuses on different applications of a solution-focused approach within diverse contexts. Please find our 2015 schedule below.
Participants
Our goal is to offer these presentations to a wide audience of professionals interested in learning about utilizing a Solution Focused Approach (SFA) with diverse clients facing their life challenges. The goal of these trainings is to provide the local and wider community with comprehensive opportunities in the diverse applications of SFBT. These strategies increase the level of skill development for practitioners, including participants from various mental health/social service capacities. And these seminars are effectively priced. Group rates are available.

The majority of sessions will be presented by Arlene Brett Gordon, Ph.D., LMFT, who met Insoo and Steve in 1991 when she was a doctoral student at Nova Southeastern University (NSU), Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
