ACCESS
Definition: “permission, liberty, or ability to enter, approach, or pass to and from a place or to approach or communicate with a person or thing.”
“Access for the sake of access or inclusion is not necessarily liberatory, but access done in the service of love, justice, connection and community is liberatory and has the power to transform.” – Mia Mingus
We believe that qualitative inquiry and training should be accessible to anyone anywhere because of its significant potential to transform our worlds. This may be an example of William Gibson’s comment, “The future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed” (2003). At TQR and in the qualitative research community writ large, we are concerned with the lack of access of qualitative knowledge, training/mentoring, and practice to large numbers of persons and communities around the world. These limitations result from many factors, including:
- money/funding
- English language dominance
- computer and internet availability
- higher institution norms and professional regulations
- academic language conventions
- differential abilities to read, write, see, and hear
We would like to gather authors and presenters who are willing to address this topic in their writing, research, programs, and initiatives. Extending qualitative inquiry ideas and principles beyond the academy is timely and holds great potential. We know that community-based research is widespread in academic and non-academic circles globally. This is a hopeful sign that qualitative research initiatives present credible value to all people regardless of their world context and circumstance. In fact, there may be usefulness in using qualitative ideas to further efforts to build justice in conflictual and marginalized communities. This topic is not only of vital importance to people around the world in their many contexts, but also to the field of qualitative inquiry if we are to remain relevant and useful in our world now and in the future.
TQR BACK TO IN-PERSON EVENT!
We are excited to announce that submissions are officially open. Barring any unforeseen challenges, the 15th Annual Conference will be back in person at Nova Southeastern University. The conference is tentatively scheduled for two days but could expand to a third day if needed. Registration and Accommodation information will be sent out at a later date.
